Modern forest protection – the basis for sustainable forestry.

Protecting the forest is one of the most important tasks when it comes to sustainable forestry. What is the most important thing here? An integrated analysis and assessment of the entire forest stock – instead of singular examinations of individual plants or damage factors. Forest protection and forest management work hand in hand – to identify the causes of damage and prevent them in the best way possible.

The aim of forest protection is to maintain forest areas as habitats and economic assets – a race against time in light of climate change. Global warming is demonstrably making many species of tree and forest stocks vulnerable and will have a major influence on flora and fauna overall. The trade fair for forest protection also looks at other aspects including protective measures against game, insects, fungi and diseases, forest firefighting and forest fire monitoring. Intelligent monitoring is therefore of elementary importance. Find out what methods, machines and equipment are needed for this at INTERFORST 2022 – along with the latest research findings regarding ways of preventing and combating forest damage.

In 2018, the following exhibitors took part in the forest protection trade fair:

Monitoring and fighting forest fires

The majority of forest fires are not caused by environmental influences. They are usually caused by humans, which makes protecting the forest particularly tricky. They can be caused by uncontrolled campfires or carelessly discarded cigarettes – in most cases accidentally but sometimes deliberately. The good news is that fire brigades have access to ever better, safer and more innovative equipment for fighting and monitoring forest fires. Large forest fires are observed and analyzed from the air with the help of aircraft, helicopters and satellites. They can be fought from the air in addition to or instead of fighting them on the ground if this is no longer sufficient. Intelligent fire fighting robots are also used if fighting the fires poses a danger to life.

The companies taking part in the last INTERFORST included:

Recording pollution levels

Forest dieback is the result of pollution which gets into the forest via rain or dust. Pollution levels can be recorded and analyzed using various investigative methods. Technical measurements are often complemented by biomonitoring, where the level of pollution in animals and plants is determined in order to draw conclusions regarding the overall situation in the forest. Plants can be grown in greenhouses and then planted out in the forest or plants from the forest can be taken and analyzed in the laboratory.

Species protection

Species protection is an important aspect of forest protection and sustainable forestry. Thanks to numerous targeted programs and environmental protection measures, the variety of species in forests is increasing once again. In order to achieve a healthy biological variety, forest protection focuses not only on the protection of animals but also on the protection of trees and plants. But how can this aspect be reconciled with the use of forests as a source of raw materials? INTERFORST 2022 will offer answers.

Reforestation

Whether it be afforestation or the reforestation of areas previously covered by forest: reforestation and natural rejuvenation play a key role in sustainable forestry. INTERFORST, the leading trade fair for the forestry industry, will provide detailed insights into this too.
